Fallopia aubertii

The most rampant climber of our climate with densely twining stems up to 12 m long. The stems can even grow 6 m and more anually. White flowers, tiny but borne in great profusion stay decorative from the beginning of August till the first frosts. Ovate-lanceolate, green leaves fall off after severe frosts. Due to its vigorous growth it's excellent as a screening plant, for covering unsightly buildings and tall fences, but will grow equally well over pergolas and various supports, provided they are strong enough to hold the mass of greenery. Quickly creates the desired effect, but requires pruning every 2-3 weeks to prevent it from becoming excessively expansive. It may freeze during severe winters, but is root hardy and in spring the stems will grow back from the base of the plant. It doesn't have any special site requirements provided the shade is not too deep and the soil too dry or poor. pl
