Menispermum canadense

Menispermum canadense - Common Moonseed

An interesting, all-purpose climber. It has conspicuous, heart-shaped leaves with barely discernible 3-7 lobes that are dark green in summer and turn yellow in autumn. Slender twining shoots densely entangle a support covering it with tiling leaves. It attains a height of 3-5 m, with 1-2 m of annual growth.

It is quite undemanding and performs well in moderate soils.

Suitable for growing over arbors, fences, pergolas, trellises and other supports, best in full sun.

Prune when needed. When the plant has excessively spread out, every 3-4 years it can be cut off at 20-40cm above the ground. Spreading stolons should be kept under control.
