Humulus lupulus

This vigorous perennial with twisting shoots is one of the most extensively cultivated hop species. The above ground part of the plant dies out every autumn and in spring new shoots emerge from hidden roots. Owing to its luxuriant growth it will cover a fence, a tree trunk, an arbor or a low building in just a few weeks. It attains up to 6 m. in height and 2-3 m in length. It's dioecious and in autumn the female plants cover with masses of yellowish-green cones and its leaves may turn to orange-green.
Hop tolerates well draughts and is an excellent screening plant. Its rampant growth habit, however, makes it unsuitable for small gardens and to be grown in close proximity to valuable plants. It's perfect for naturalistic planting. It will tolerate well every soil as long as it's moderately moist or moist. When growing in a sunny and dry situation it's frequently attacked by spiders and aphids. Leaves that are often wet can be susceptible to downy mildew, which causes brown, drying spots on the leaf surface.
- 'Aureus'
- a female form, it has yellow leaves during all growing season. Grows best and has the most prominent leaf color in full sun. A very valuable variety, ideal for color combination.
