A compact perennial vine with attractive dark green lanceolate leaves. Flowers small, dark-purple-violet, almost black with yellow stamens, popular with insects. Blossoms progress in autumn to long sharp pointed seedpods that open at maturity to release seeds that drift away on silky parachutes. Old woody stems should be cut back just above the ground. It requires well-drained organic soil, rich in humus, and kept moist but not wet. Best grown in a warm sunny position.. An amateur plant, easy in propagation. Excellent for small fences, trellises and other small garden supports.
