A hardy, undemanding cultivar. Very deep reddish-purple flowers with matching anthers. Suitable for growing over fences, pergolas, arbors and various garden supports. It can clamber over natural supports such as small trees and shrubs. Excellent for cultivation in large containers on terraces and balconies. Like most clematis with deep coloring, it looks particularly effective when grown through plants with pale foliage. Recommended to both amateurs and connoisseurs. May be used as ground cover.Raised by F. Morel, France. Introduced in 1939.
