On the outside sepals have 2-3 distinct ribs. Stamens consist of yellow anthers set on white filaments. Flowers borne on this year's wood from July till September. From August till October an interesting feature are spiky seedheads. Leaves, 16 cm long and 17 cm wide consist of 3-5 ovate leaflets of 8.5-9 cm length and 5 cm width. New shoots are light green, old ones are brown. The plant reaches 1.5 m height. Climbs by leaf petioles.

It is frost hardy, tolerates average, well drained soil. Prefers sunny sites. Recommended especially to gardening connoisseurs. Looks particularly attractive when intermingled with small deciduous or coniferous shrubs. It is worth planting along garden paths to allow a close view of its elaborate small flowers. Suitable for container cultivation.
